ABSTRACT

Purpose@#Gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy is an important tool for diagnosing and treating GI diseases in children. This study aimed to analyze the current GI endoscopy practice patterns among South Korean pediatric endoscopists. @*Methods@#Twelve members of the Korean Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition developed a questionnaire. The questionnaire was emailed to pediatric gastroenterologists attending general and tertiary hospitals in South Korea. @*Results@#The response rate was 86.7% (52/60), and 49 of the respondents (94.2%) were currently performing endoscopy. All respondents were performing esophagogastroduodenoscopy, and 43 (87.8%) were performing colonoscopy. Relatively rare procedures for children, such as double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) (4.1%), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) (2.0%), and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) (2.0%), were only performed by pediatric gastroenterologists at very few centers, but were performed by adult endoscopists in most of the centers; of all the respondents, 83.7% (41/49) performed emergency endoscopy. In most centers, the majority of the endoscopies were performed under sedation, with midazolam (100.0%) and ketamine (67.3%) as the most frequently used sedatives. @*Conclusion@#While most pediatric GI endoscopists perform common GI endoscopic procedures, rare procedures, such as DBE, ERCP, and EUS, are only performed by pediatric gastroenterologists at very few centers, and by adult GI endoscopists at most of the centers. For such rare procedures, close communication and cooperation with adult GI endoscopists are required.

ABSTRACT

Cutaneous adverse drug reactions are common and produce easily identifiable clinical symptoms. These may range from mild maculopapular rashes to severe reactions associated with systemic disease.Current Concepts: The most common presentation of a drug eruption is in the form of a maculopapular rash or exanthematous skin eruption, followed by fixed drug eruptions and urticaria. Severe cutaneous adverse drug reactions include Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, and drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome/drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms, which are rare but potentially life-threatening. Recently, it has emerged that cutaneous adverse drug reactions associated with newly developed drugs, such as epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors, may induce a variety of cutaneous manifestations.Discussion and Conclusion: Although certain drugs, such as antimicrobials and anticonvulsants, can frequently cause drug eruptions, their effects may change, depending on the situation and timing. Therefore, in order to resolve symptoms and prevent complications, early diagnosis, drug identification, and appropriate treatment should be performed, in consideration of the various factors involved.

ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives@#mRNA-based protein expression technology has been used to express functional proteins. We have previously generated dopamine neurons from rat-embryo derived neural precursor cells (NPCs) through repeated transfection of synthetic transcription factor mRNA encoding dopamine-inducible genes. However, NPCs began to die approximately 10 d post-transfection. In this study, we examined a long-term transfection protocol that did not affect cell viability. @*Methods@#and Results: Experiments were performed in eight groups sorted according to the start date of mRNA transfection. mRNA was transfected into NPCs daily for 21 d and live cell images of each group were recorded. NPCs which were differentiated for more than five days showed sustained gene expression and appreciable viability despite daily mRNA transfection for 21 d. @*Conclusions@#Repeated mRNA transfection requires cells with a sufficient differentiation period.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND@#Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic and intractable disease that can severely deteriorate patients’ quality of life. Recently, stem cell therapy has been introduced as a promising alternative treatment for IC in animal models. We aimed to verify the efficacy and safety of the human perirenal adipose tissue-derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF) in an IC rat model. @*METHODS@#From eight-week-old female rats, an IC rat model was established by subcutaneous injection of 200 lg of uroplakin3A. The SVF was injected into the bladder submucosal layer of IC rats, and pain scale analysis, awakening cytometry, and histological and gene analyses of the bladder were performed. For the in vivo safety analysis, genomic DNA purification and histological analysis were also performed to check tumorigenicity and thrombus formation. @*RESULTS@#The mean pain scores in the SVF 20 ll group were significantly lower on days 7 and 14 than those in the control group, and bladder intercontraction intervals were significantly improved in the SVF groups in a dose-dependent manner. Regeneration of the bladder epithelium, basement membrane, and lamina propria was observed in the SVF group.In the SVF groups, however, bladder fibrosis and the expression of inflammatory markers were not significantly improved compared to those in the control group. @*CONCLUSION@#This study demonstrated that a perirenal adipose tissue-derived SVF is a promising alternative for the management of IC in terms of improving bladder pain and overactivity.

ABSTRACT

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder characterized by tremors, bradykinesia, and rigidity. PD is caused by loss of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the midbrain substantia nigra (SN) and therefore, replenishment of DA neurons via stem cell-based therapy is a potential treatment option. Astrocytes are the most abundant non-neuronal cells in the central nervous system and are promising candidates for reprogramming into neuronal cells because they share a common origin with neurons. The ability of neural progenitor cells (NPCs) to proliferate and differentiate may overcome the limitations of the reduced viability and function of transplanted cells after cell replacement therapy. Achaete-scute complex homolog-like 1 (Ascl1) is a wellknown neuronal-specific factor that induces various cell types such as human and mouse astrocytes and fibroblasts to differentiate into neurons. Nurr1 is involved in the differentiation and maintenance of DA neurons, and decreased Nurr1 expression is known to be a major risk factor for PD. Previous studies have shown that direct conversion of astrocytes into DA neurons and NPCs can be induced by overexpression of Ascl1 and Nurr1 and additional transcription factors genes such as superoxide dismutase 1 and SRY-box 2. Here, we demonstrate that astrocytes isolated from the ventral midbrain, the origin of SN DA neurons, can be effectively converted into DA neurons and NPCs with enhanced viability. In addition, when these NPCs are inducted to differentiate, they exhibit key characteristics of DA neurons. Thus, direct conversion of midbrain astrocytes is a possible cell therapy strategy to treat neurodegenerative diseases.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#The strategy of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) treatment in household tuberculosis (TB) contacts has been expanding in South Korea. However, there is little evidence of the cost-effectiveness of LTBI treatment in patients over 35 years of age. This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of LTBI treatment among household TB contacts in different age groups in South Korea. @*Materials and Methods@#An age-structured model of TB was developed based on the reports from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and the National Health Insurance Service. Quality-adjusted life-years (QALY) and the averted number of TBrelated deaths were estimated along with discounted costs for a measure of incremental cost-effectiveness ratios. @*Results@#The number of cumulative active TB cases would decrease by 1564 and 7450 under the scenario of LTBI treatment for those aged <35 years and <70 years, respectively, relative to the no-treatment scenario. The treatment strategies for patients aged 0 to <35 years, <55 years, <65 years, and <70 years would add 397, 1482, 3782, and 8491 QALYs at a cost of $660, $5930, $4560, and $2530, respectively, per QALY. For the averted TB-related deaths, LTBI treatment targeting those aged 0 to <35 years, <55 years, <65 years, and <70 years would avert 7, 89, 155, and 186 deaths at a cost of $35900, $99200, $111100, and $115700 per deaths, respectively, in 20 years. @*Conclusion@#The age-specific expansion policy of LTBI treatment not only for those under 35 years of age but also for those under 65 years of age among household contacts was cost-effective in terms of QALYs and averted TB deaths.

ABSTRACT

Lung cancer is representative of a high frequency and high mortality disease and ranks at the top in incidence and mortality in Korea, when excluding thyroid cancer. In this manuscript, we focused on current targeted therapies for lung cancer used widely in the medical field.Current Concepts: The majority of patients with lung cancer cannot be treated with surgery only and require chemotherapeutics or radiation therapy. Currently, classical chemotherapeutic agents, targeted agents, and immune checkpoint inhibitors are the most widely used. Recently, the Research and Development of antibody-drug conjugates is gaining attention, and this may become a more widely prescribed treatment in the future. Among the available treatment options, targeted therapy is becoming increasingly feasible and widespread for treating inoperable lung cancers, where driver mutations have been identified, and for adjuvant or neoadjuvant therapies. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) improves the ability to identify driver mutations that were previously difficult to detect and can also be performed on blood samples where no cancer tissue is available for testing. This makes it possible to identify therapeutic targets for targeted therapy more rapidly.Discussion and Conclusion: The most common type of lung cancer in Korea is adenocarcinoma, for which a driver mutation has been identified. Newly developed drugs target previously problematic mutations or cancer cell lines that have acquired resistance induced during the treatment process. The survival rate of patients with lung cancer is expected to improve with the development of tailored treatments for targets identified from the NGS data of the patient. This paper will help clinicians understand the current state of targeted therapies for lung cancer treatment.

ABSTRACT

Lung cancer ranks first in cancer mortality in Korea and cancer incidence in Korean men. More than half of Korean lung cancer patients undergo chemotherapy, including adjuvant therapy. Cytotoxic agents, targeted therapy, and immune checkpoint inhibitors are used in chemotherapy according to the biopsy and genetic test results. Among chemotherapy, the one that has developed rapidly is targeted therapy. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines have been updated recently for targeted therapy of multiple gene mutations, and targeted therapy is used not only for chemotherapy but also for adjuvant therapy. While previously targeted therapies have been developed for common genetic mutations, recently targeted therapies have been developed to overcome uncommon mutations or drug resistance that have occurred since previous targeted therapy. Therefore, this study describes recent, rapidly developing targeted therapies.

ABSTRACT

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a relatively rare, slow-growing dermal spindle cell tumor characterized by high local recurrence rates and a low risk of metastasis. It starts as an erythematous indurated papule or plaque where firm nodules subsequently arise, forming typical ‘protuberant’ morphology. However, atypical DFSP presentations, which are difficult to diagnose clinically, have been reported. In this study, we describe three patients diagnosed with diversely atypical DFSP, which were pigmented, hemangioma-like, and cystic DFSP variants. Among them, two patients were misdiagnosed with other diseases, resulting in delayed treatment, with much larger resections needed to achieve local control or avoid recurrence. Therefore, dermatologists should pay attention to these diverse clinical variants of DFSP.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#Eating disorders often result in somatic complications, including cardiac abnormalities. Cardiac abnormalities may involve any part of the heart, including the cardiac conduction system, and can lead to sudden cardiac death. The current study aimed to evaluate the incidence of cardiac complications in pediatric patients with eating disorders and their associated factors. @*Methods@#We retrospectively analyzed patients aged 10–18 years who were diagnosed with DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder-V) eating disorders and underwent electrocardiography (ECG) and/or echocardiography between January 2015 and May 2020. @*Results@#In total, 127 patients were included, of whom 113 (89.0%) were female. The median body mass index (BMI) was 15.05±3.69 kg/m2 . Overall, 74 patients (58.3%) had ECG abnormalities, with sinus bradycardia being the most common abnormality (91.9%). Patients with ECG abnormalities had significantly lower BMI (14.35±2.78 kg/m2 vs. 16.06± 4.55 kg/m2 , p<0.001) than patients without ECG abnormalities, as well as lower phosphorus and higher cholesterol levels. Among the 46 patients who underwent echocardiographic evaluation, 23 (50.0%) had echocardiographic abnormalities, with pericardial effusion being the most common (60.9%). The median left ventricular mass (LVM) and ejection fraction were 67.97±21.25 g and 66.91±28.76%, respectively. LVM and BMI showed a positive correlation (r=0.604, p<0.001). After weight gain, the amount of pericardial effusion was reduced in 3 patients, and 30 patients presented with normal ECG findings. @*Conclusion@#Cardiac abnormalities are relatively frequent in patients with eating disorders.Physicians should focus on this somatic complication and careful monitoring is required.

Background@#Ginseng has been used in Korea for a long time as a restorative herbal medicine. Black ginseng (BG) is made from red or white ginseng by multiple steamy and dry processes. Although BG has been reported to have anti-inflammatory potential, studies on its influence on inflammatory skin disorders are lacking. @*Objective@#To investigate the effects of BG under the inflammatory conditions of cultured sebocytes and outer root sheath (ORS) cells. @*Methods@#The cultured cells were treated with 0.1% dimethyl sulfoxide, 5 μg/ml lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or 5 μg/ml LPS+50 μg/ml BG for 6 hours and 24 hours. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), real-time PCR, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, western blotting, immunofluorescence staining and Nile red staining were performed for analysis of inflammatory biomarkers and sebum-related biomarkers. @*Results@#BG brought out the increased gene and protein expression of inflammatory biomarkers such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-a, in the LPStreated sebocytes and ORS cells. In addition, BG induced increased expression of TLR4, p-c-jun, p-JNK and p-iκB in LPS-treated sebocytes and ORS cells. Furthermore, it significantly increased the expression of LL-37 and the production of sebum in LPS-treated sebocytes. @*Conclusion@#It may be possible for BG to increase the expression of inflammatory biomarkers in inflammatory skin disorders, such as acne.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#This study was to investigate the mediating effects of health concern and depression on the stress and fatigue of COVID-19 self-quarantine. @*Methods@#This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 227 people with COVID-19 self-quarantine experience were recruited during May 2021. Participants were invited to complete self-reported questionnaires that measure stress, health concern, depression, fatigue and demographic information. The data obtained were analyzed using multiple regression and dual mediation model applying the PROCESS macro with 95% bias-corrected bootstrap confidence interval. @*Results@#This study analyzed the direct effects of COVID-19 stress on the health concern, depression and fatigue. And COVID-19 stress had indirect effects on their fatigue via health concern and depression. Both health concern and depression had dual mediating effects in the influence of COVID-19 stress on fatigue. In the relationship between COVID-19 stress and fatigue, the mediating effect of depression was significant. @*Conclusion@#Fatigue due to prolonged COVID-19 can be alleviated by managing stress and mediating health concern and depression, and so therefore active nursing intervention is required.

Background@#Although particulate matter likely provokes inflammatory reactions in those with chronic skin disorders like atopic dermatitis, no study has examined the relationship between particulate matter and psoriasis exacerbation. @*Objective@#This study evaluated possible associations between particulate matter and hospital visits for psoriasis patients in 7 major cities in South Korea. @*Methods@#We investigated the relationship between psoriasis and particulate matter. To do this, we used psoriasis patient data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. In addition, PM 10 and PM 2.5 concentration data spanning a 3-year time frame were obtained from the Korea Environment Corporation. @*Results@#A pattern analysis generated by the sample cross-correlation function and time series regression showed a correlation between particulate matter concentration and the number of hospital visits by psoriasis patients. However, the prewhitening method, which minimizes the effects of other variables besides particulate matter, revealed no correlation between the two. @*Conclusion@#This study suggests that particulate matter has no impact on hospital visit frequency among psoriasis patients in South Korean urban areas.

ABSTRACT

South Korea is not a wasteland of publicly funded health care—instead, it has a good medical social security system known as the national health insurance (NHI). The NHI of Korea has three unique features; (1) low premiums, low insurance fees, and low coverage; (2) obligatory designation of medical institutions; (3) and allowance of non-benefit services. These features have made hospitals and doctors interested in profit-seeking. However, the commercialization of medical institutions has taken place in both private- and public-established sectors. A basic problem of commercialization is the co-existence of the obligatory designation of medical institutions and non-benefit services. The problem became worse in the Kim Dae-Jung government because it officially permitted non-benefit services. Since 2000, the Korean government has consistently pursued benefit extension policies, but the coverage rates of the NHI have stagnated. In addition, premiums and current medical expenses have markedly increased because policy-makers have emphasized accessibility to the NHI, while ignoring important principles of medical social security such as a needs-based approach and patient-referral system. In order to resolve the commercialization problem, the obligatory designation of medical institutions to the NHI should be changed to a contract system, and non-benefit services should be prohibited at NHI institutions. We must re-establish the patient-referral system via a needs-based approach. We also need to build a primary healthcare system and public health policies. We should make a long-term plan for healthcare reform.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To evaluate whether artificial intelligence (AI) for detecting breast cancer on mammography can improve the performance and time efficiency of radiologists reading mammograms. @*Materials and Methods@#A commercial deep learning-based software for mammography was validated using external data collected from 200 patients, 100 each with and without breast cancer (40 with benign lesions and 60 without lesions) from one hospital. Ten readers, including five breast specialist radiologists (BSRs) and five general radiologists (GRs), assessed all mammography images using a seven-point scale to rate the likelihood of malignancy in two sessions, with and without the aid of the AI-based software, and the reading time was automatically recorded using a web-based reporting system. Two reading sessions were conducted with a two-month washout period in between. Differences in the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC), sensitivity, specificity, and reading time between reading with and without AI were analyzed, accounting for data clustering by readers when indicated. @*Results@#The AUROC of the AI alone, BSR (average across five readers), and GR (average across five readers) groups was 0.915 (95% confidence interval, 0.876–0.954), 0.813 (0.756–0.870), and 0.684 (0.616–0.752), respectively. With AI assistance, the AUROC significantly increased to 0.884 (0.840–0.928) and 0.833 (0.779–0.887) in the BSR and GR groups, respectively (p = 0.007 and p < 0.001, respectively). Sensitivity was improved by AI assistance in both groups (74.6% vs. 88.6% in BSR, p < 0.001; 52.1% vs. 79.4% in GR, p < 0.001), but the specificity did not differ significantly (66.6% vs. 66.4% in BSR, p = 0.238; 70.8% vs. 70.0% in GR, p = 0.689). The average reading time pooled across readers was significantly decreased by AI assistance for BSRs (82.73 vs. 73.04 seconds, p < 0.001) but increased in GRs (35.44 vs. 42.52 seconds, p < 0.001). @*Conclusion@#AI-based software improved the performance of radiologists regardless of their experience and affected the reading time.

Background and Objectives@#Although several studies have compared the characteristics of Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) with Bell’s palsy (BP), the differences in comorbid symptoms and prognosis according to symptoms have not been determined. This study therefore evaluated the differences in otologic symptoms and prognosis between patients with these two conditions.Subjects and Method The medical records of 118 patients with RHS and 215 patients with BP were retrospectively reviewed. Factors compared in these two groups included otologic symptoms, general health condition, electroneurography (ENoG) and House-Brackmann grades. @*Results@#Age, sex, body mass index, lipid profiles, ENoG, rate of diabetes, and side of palsy did not differ significantly between patients with RHS and BP (p>0.05). The rates of hearing disturbance, tinnitus, vertigo, and postauricular pain were significantly higher in RHS (p0.05). Additionally, in patients with facial paralysis, diabetes was associated with hearing disturbance and vertigo symptoms and dyslipidemia was associated with postauricular pain (p<0.05 each). @*Conclusion@#Otologic symptoms were more common in RHS than in BP. However, the prognosis of RHS and BP were not related to otologic symptoms. In patients with facial palsy hearing disturbance and vertigo were associated with diabetes and hypertension. Also, dyslipidemia was associated with post auricular pain.

Background@#Colorectal polyps are the most common cause of isolated hematochezia in children, which requires a colonoscopy for diagnosis. We aimed to investigate the potential utility of fecal calprotectin (FC) in assessing colorectal polyps detected by colonoscopy among children presenting with isolated hematochezia. @*Methods@#Pediatric patients of the age of < 18 years who had undergone both colonoscopy and FC tests for isolated hematochezia from June 2016 to May 2020 were included in the present multicenter, retrospective, cross-sectional study. Comparative analysis was conducted between major causes of isolated hematochezia and FC cut-offs for discriminating colorectal polyps were explored. @*Results@#A total 127 patients were included. Thirty-five patients (27.6%) had colorectal polyps, followed by anal fissure (14.2%), ulcerative colitis (UC; 12.6%), and others. A significant difference in FC levels was observed between patients with colorectal polyps (median, 278.7 mg/kg), anal fissures (median, 42.2 mg/kg), and UC (median, 981 mg/ kg) (P < 0.001). According to receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, among patients diagnosed with colorectal polyp or anal fissure, the most accurate FC cut-off for discriminating colorectal polyps from anal fissures on colonoscopy was 225 mg/kg (sensitivity, 59.4%; specificity, 94.4%; positive predictive value [PPV], 95.0%; negativepredictive value [NPV], 56.7%; area under the curve [AUC], 0.8; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.678–0.923; P < 0.001), while among patients diagnosed with colorectal polyp or UC, the most accurate FC cut-off for discriminating colorectal polyps from UC on colonoscopy was 879 mg/kg (sensitivity, 81.2%; specificity, 56.2%; PPV, 78.8%; NPV, 60.0%; AUC, 0.687; 95% CI, 0.521–0.852; P < 0.001). @*Conclusion@#FC may assist in assessing the cause of lower gastrointestinal tract bleeding in children who present with isolated hematochezia.

Purpose@#This study examined the practical training experiences of nursing students during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and investigated their experience during their practical training. @*Methods@#Data were collected between April 29 and June 24, 2021. The 29 participants chosen from three universities in the study were either fourth-year students or graduated in 2021 after attending nursing college, and they had taken at least one semester of practical training including alternative practice training after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Inductive content analysis was employed for data analysis. @*Results@#Based on the analysis of data from focus group interviews, the following four categories and 11 theme clusters were drawn from 235 key statements: (1) situational change in the clinical practice environment; (2) perceived difficulties in developing core competencies as a nursing student; (3) unstandardized alternative practical training procedures; and (4) demand for systematic improvement in practical training while maintaining social distancing. @*Conclusion@#The results of this study demonstrate the need for effective and constructive practical clinical training in order for nursing students to achieve productive learning from practical training while maintaining social distancing, Alternative training modalities should continue to be developed and reviewed.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES@#To evaluate the nutritional status and prevalence of malnutrition in hospitalized children at admission and during hospitalization in South Korea. @*SUBJECTS/METHODS@#This first cross-sectional nationwide “Pediatric Nutrition Day (pNday)” survey was conducted among 872 hospitalized children (504 boys, 368 girls; 686 medical, 186 surgical) from 23 hospitals in South Korea. Malnutrition risk was screened using the Pediatric Yorkhill Malnutrition Score (PYMS) and the Screening Tool Risk on Nutritional status and Growth. Nutritional status was assessed by z-scores of weight-for-age for underweight, weight-for-height for wasting, and height-for-age for stunting as well as laboratory tests. @*RESULTS@#At admission, of the 872 hospitalized children, 17.2% were underweight, and the prevalence of wasting and stunting was 20.2% and 17.3%, respectively. During hospitalization till pNday, 10.8% and 19.6% experienced weight loss and decreased oral intake, respectively.During the aforementioned period, fasting was more prevalent in surgical patients (7.5%) than in medical patients (1.6%) (P < 0.001). According to the PYMS, 34.3% and 30% of the children at admission and on pNday, respectively, had a high-risk of malnutrition, requiring consultation with the nutritional support team (NST). However, only 4% were actually referred to the NST during hospitalization. @*CONCLUSIONS@#Malnutrition was prevalent at admission and during hospitalization in pediatric patients, with many children experiencing weight loss and poor oral intake. To improve the nutritional status of hospitalized children, it is important to screen and identify all children at risk of malnutrition and refer malnourished patients to the multidisciplinary NST for proper nutritional interventions.

Background@#Cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) develops mainly in the elderly, although it is often seen in young patients and in clinical practice. However, there are few studies on the clinical features of young patients with CMM in Korea. @*Objective@#To investigate the clinical characteristics of young Korean patients with CMM. @*Methods@#We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with CMM between January 2009 and June 2019 and compared the clinical features of CMM in patients aged 10∼39 and 50∼79 years. @*Results@#Of the 341 patients with CMM, only 22 (6.5%) were between the age of 10∼39 and 250 (73.3%) were aged 50∼79. Acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) was the most common clinical subtype in both groups (45.5% and 71.2%, respectively). Subungual melanoma was more common in age 10∼39 years (27.3% vs. 17.2%), whereas ALM except subungual melanoma was more common in age 50∼79 years (18.2% vs. 54.0%). Superficial spreading melanoma (31.8%) was also a significant subtype observed in age 10∼39 years (p<0.001). Frequently involved locations in age group 10∼39 were fingers (27.3%) and trunk (22.7%), but feet (40.8%) were common in age group 50∼79 (p=0.009). There were no differences in mean Breslow thickness, lymph node metastases, or staging of CMM (p>0.05). @*Conclusion@#Compared with elderly patients, CMM in patients aged 10∼39 showed differences in the location of the lesion and clinical subtype. Therefore, a misdiagnosis can be prevented when a young patient has suspected CMM on the finger or trunk.
